Why should a space such as this be born? The reply lies somewhere between the logic of philosophy and the inexpressibility of intuition. The gallery's raison d'etre is therefore articulated both through the words that follow and the works we choose to exhibit. Fuze Gallery was inspired by the belief that visual art makes an indispensable contribution to existence. The gallery embraces and seeks art which enriches life through a kind of raw beauty which stands outside the realm of ideas, as well as art whose enrichment and beauty derives from the concept explored by the work. The gallery's philosophy holds that a central function of art is to examine, record, and reconcile elements of our world which are unique to the present day, as well as proposing possibilities for what those elements may become. In other terms, art can help us to make some sense of what it means to be alive in the present day. This belief is what defines the gallery as contemporary in its curatorial mission. The mission also holds that non-representational art is still the most probing, powerful, and effective way of going about the rendering of modern life. Art is not, however, solely about preparing the history that will be written about us. Its elevation of a single moment is perhaps just as important as its exploration of broader matter. Art has the ability to ease suffering through empathy as much as it has the ability to enrage and disturb through provocation. It is these varied, potent, and essential functions of art which philosophically drove the gallery into existence. This set of abstract & ethereal aspirations must be balanced with hopes of a more tangible form. Fuze gallery intends to actively foster the creative growth of its exhibiting artists as well as encourage the understanding & appreciation of abstract art among members of the community. The gallery also hopes to be an active social space within the dynamic social fabric of downtown San Diego. In addition to aiding artists and the community as separate entities, the gallery will provide a channel for dialogue between the two. Lastly, spurred by the belief that each visual medium uniquely illuminates the landscape of modern life, the gallery will exhibit painting, sculpture, and installation art, as well as experimental and independent films. We hope that you will spend some time looking through the portfolios of our exhibiting artists and, more importantly, find time to come in to see their work firsthand. The web is undoubtedly an amazing tool, but it is no substitute for coming downtown and experiencing both the city and our works on exhibit for the texture, color, life, and richness that they share. |
